Italian vs British Yachts: How to Choose a Used Boat in Hong Kong

Italian or British used yacht in Hong Kong? We compare 24 Sun Yachts listings (14 Italian, 10 British) by brand, price, length and year, and show how to choose by budget, size and use rather than by country, with comparison tables and a checklist of questions.

2026.10.27Sun Yachts

The short answer: this is not a question of which country is better, but of what you will use the boat for, what you can spend and what size you need. Of the 65 listings in Sun Yachts' current stock (as of 27 Oct 2026), 14 list Italy as origin and 10 list the UK, 24 in all. The Italian group spans 7 brands and asking prices from HK$480,000 to HK$42,800,000. The British group has just 3 brands (Fairline, Princess, Sunseeker), with asking prices weighted toward the higher end. The numbers below set it out, followed by how to choose for your own situation.

First: what does the "origin" field mean?

Every grouping here uses the "Origin" line on each listing in the stock data. Three cautions:

  1. It is listing data, not necessarily where the boat was built or where the brand is headquartered. For example, the 2018 Sealine F380 lists "Germany" and the 2023 XO EXPLR 10 Sport lists "Poland". Sealine is a British-origin brand (long built at Kidderminster, England), and since its 2013 purchase by the parent of HanseYachts has been built in Germany (Wikipedia: Sealine). Because that listing says Germany, it is not counted in the British group.
  2. Spelling is inconsistent. Italy appears as "Italy", "ITALY" and "italy"; we merge them (of 14 listings, 12 say Italy, 1 says ITALY (2009 Ferretti 470 Fly) and 1 says italy (2016 Tullio Abbate Elite 27)). British boats all say UK.
  3. Engines often come from elsewhere. Many boats in both groups carry Volvo Penta, Caterpillar, MAN, Cummins or MTU engines (see below), so "where the boat is from" and "where the engine is from" are separate questions.

So treat the origin field as listing data, not as a manufacturer statement. To find out where an individual boat was actually built, ask the seller or the broker at the viewing.

How these were calculated:

  • Method: each listing counts once, as listed.
  • Price on request excluded. The 2021 Princess Y85 is price on request, so it is left out of the British price range and median (9 priced boats).
  • Length outlier. The 2013 Azimut Grande120 SL (35.5 m) sets the Italian maximum; without it the range is 8.20 - 21.2 m.
  • One further listing lists Hong Kong as origin and is in neither group.

Points to note:

Where the brands are based (checked against public sources):

  • UK: Fairline is headquartered in Oundle, Northamptonshire (Wikipedia); Princess in Plymouth (Wikipedia); Sunseeker in Poole (Wikipedia; the Sunseeker site also lists Sunseeker Poole).
  • Italy: Absolute's company address is Podenzano (PC) (official); Azimut is part of Azimut Benetti S.p.A. (official); Ferretti Group is headquartered in Forlì (Wikipedia); Cranchi is at Piantedo on Lake Como (Cranchi heritage, yachtbuyer.com); Sanlorenzo is headquartered in Ameglia, La Spezia (Wikipedia); Tullio Abbate was founded by the Italian Tullio Abbate (Wikipedia).
  • Dominator: Boat International says the company is headquartered in Austria and builds in Fano, Italy (Boat International). So an "Italy" listing there looks like a build location rather than a head office, which is exactly why the origin field is not the same as brand HQ.

Beyond that, this article does not state founding years, design philosophy or model specifications.

Browse every boat in a band, any origin: under HK$1M, HK$1-3M, HK$3-6M, HK$6M+. For lower budgets see boats under HK$500,000.

What the numbers do say: below HK$3M the stock has 4 Italian listings and 2 British; at HK$6M or more, 5 British and 4 Italian. That describes the range of choice, not "one country is cheaper or dearer". Price depends on age, length, condition, engines and equipment, and the sample is only 24 listings.

  • Under 40 ft, every boat in stock is Italian-listed by listed length (for example the 2013 Cranchi M38 and 2016 Tullio Abbate Elite 27).
  • 40-55 ft has choice in both groups (7 Italian, 4 British), the size band with the most overlap and the easiest to compare directly.
  • 55-75 ft has 5 British and 3 Italian listings.

Note: lengths are as listed; actual dimensions should be confirmed at viewing and with the seller, and we draw no conclusion from any single length. Browse all stock by length (any origin): 30–40 ft, 40–50 ft, over 50 ft. For help choosing a size, see how many feet for a first yacht and our used yacht buying guide.

This table does not rank anything. It is a reminder to ask about the engine make and the builder separately: service records, overhaul history and whether a technician familiar with that engine is available locally. These questions apply to a boat from any country. For more on engine types and hours, see our engine types guide and engine hours guide.

How to choose: three questions

Ignoring nationality, ask yourself:

  1. What is your budget ceiling? Use the price bands above: below HK$3M the stock leans Italian; at HK$6M or more both groups have options.
  2. What size do you need? Under 40 ft is Italian-listed only; 55-75 ft leans British; 40-55 ft lets you compare both.
  3. What kind of layout do you want? Listing names show Fly (flybridge), Navetta, Squadron and Y-series models, each laid out differently, so see them in person. (We do not make sweeping claims about national "style" because there is no verifiable source; for design features see each brand guide and the manufacturer's site.)

Then move to individual boats: engine hours and service history, a survey, berthing and insurance (see ownership costs, financing, berthing). To browse all stock: /yachts.

FAQ — Common Questions

The questions buyers actually ask

Which is better, Italian or British?
There is no single answer. We use Sun Yachts' stock to describe choice: the Italian group has 14 listings and 7 brands with a wider price range; the British group has 10 listings and 3 brands with a higher median. Which is better depends on your budget, size and use, plus the condition and maintenance of the individual boat.
Why group by origin rather than brand?
Origin is an existing field on every listing, so the same rule can be applied to all boats. But it does not necessarily equal where a boat was built (see above), so we treat it as listing data, not a manufacturer statement. For individual brands, see the brand pages and guides.
Are British boats more expensive?
In stock, the British median asking price is HK$7,500,000 (9 priced listings) and the Italian is HK$3,990,000 (14). But the groups also differ in median length (about 18.6 m vs about 14.9 m), so the gap mostly reflects which boats happen to be in stock, not that British boats of the same size cost more. For a fair comparison, look at individual listings of similar size and year.
Are any boats price on request?
Yes. The 2021 Princess Y85 is price on request and is excluded from the price range and median above.
When were these figures taken?
All figures are a snapshot as of 27 Oct 2026. Sales, price changes and new listings will change them.
